Lesson 1: Landscapes

Year 5 looked at a variety of landscape paintings by a variety of different artists. They gave their opinions about the different artworks and learnt how to look really carefully at how the artist used brush strokes ,light, dark and colour in their work. They then chose a few paintings to investigate.

Monet collages

Year 5 continued with their Monet inspired collages. They look great, well done year 5.You’ve taken care with your work. Some very effective pieces of work.

Monet inspired collage

Year 5 chose a Monet painting.They then sketched the basic outline, chose their colours from a variety of paper and fabric to start their Monet inspired collage.

Collaborative Monet cityscape

Year 5 looked at some of Monet’s cityscape paintings. They were each given a section of Sunset in Venice. To enable them to accurately paint their piece , they also practised mixing colours. Their mini paintings will then be put together to create a version of the original painting.

Andy Warhol meets The finding of Moses follow up – Arts Day

Today, year 5 looked carefully at their deconstructed Finding of Moses work which they started on Friday with the resident artist. They then decided whether to complete their work by adding colour with water colour pencils then using a paintbrush and water to blend the lines or to create a new composition. Some fantastic pieces of work were produced today.

Andy Warhol meets the finding of Moses

The children in Year 5 looked at ways of interpreting The Finding of Moses in the style
of Andy Warhol. They looked at Andy Warhol’s versions of the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper and then worked to deconstruct and reinterpret an outline drawing of The Finding of Moses. They used red
and black carbon paper to create their own compositions from the outline drawing with
some really interesting results. They finished their work off by outlining their new compositions with watercolour pencils. Next steps will be to a paintbrush and water to blend the outlines.

Monet haystacks

Year 5 looked a variety of Haystacks that Monet had painted over the years. Monet was fascinated with how light and the seasons affected the landscape. The children had a go at painting some haystacks during different seasons using impressionist skills they’d recently practised.

Landscape painting in the style of Monet

Year 5 looked at a few of Monet’s landscape paintings. They identified the short strokes and the use of light synonymous with Monet’s impressionist style of painting. They then chose a black and white copy image of a landscape. They carefully observed the colours of the original and used the Monet’s style of painting to create their own landscapes.

Finding out about Impressionism and expressing opinion

Year 5 looked at a variety of painting by a few different Impressionist artists. They discussed what they noticed about how the paintings were painted as well as expressing their opinion about them, giving reasons. They also found out about the Impressionist art movement. They then chose 2 images and answered a few questions about them, ending with giving their opinions about the two images they had chosen.

Finding out about Monet

Year 5 took notes while they watched some videos about Monet and his life. They then took the 5 facts they’d found out and presented them as a colourful poster.
