This half term, year 5 will be finding out about Monet and his work. They will also look at the work of other Impressionists , expressing their opinions and commenting on the images they’ve chosen to comment on. They will also be sketching and painting landscapes,looking at mixing colours to create a collaborative city painting. They will then finish off the topic with creating their own Monet collage.

The children traced around their hands, then they drew lines, joining them up inside the hand. They then chose at least 3 colours which they then alternated to create some very effective illusions.

Year 5 enjoyed creating an optical illusion. They chose two different colours, a darker colour and lighter colour to create an effective illusion.

During lockdown, year 5 continued with their work on illusions and how artists use illusion. They explored foreshortening, the impossible trident and the Penrose or impossible triangle, hyperrealism and Scott Mills work. The also took part in the Dazzle project. Some of the children’s work is on exhibition at the Clayden Gallery, Quay Arts alongside the artist Lisa Traxler, who provided the online video so the children could take part. Year 5, learnt how to transfer an image of a fireplace scene onto another piece of paper. They then outlined their transfer and coloured it in. Some children chose to design their own picture. These images will be copied onto card, making a special Christmas card to take home.

Year 5 created a Christmas tree collage using white tissue paper and silver paper and fabric. They then embellished their trees with silver and blue sparkles. The trees will be adding a splash of colour to the COVID testing centre in Newport.

Year 5 explored how artists use perspective to create a realistic interior. They used a vanishing point and rectangles to create the shape of the room, then they added in a door. After that they create another rectangle and door to create the illusion of walking through a few rooms to the outside. They finished off their interior by adding colour.

Year 5 enjoyed using pointillist techniques and colouring create their Remembrance Day art.Paint brushes were used to make tiny dots. They mixed black with red to create a different shade of red to create different textures. Their poppies will be on display at the COVID test centre next week.

Year 5 sketched a landscape scene using perspective. They were shown step by step how to create the landscape so that they can apply perspective techniques to their own work. They used horizontal lines, vanishing points as well as sketching items in the foreground larger to show distance.
